Eastern Spiš boasts a town that is literally a cultural and historical treasure among Slovak cities and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Levoča is one of the most visited towns in Slovakia. The heart of the city is a unique, rectangular market square, which is surrounded by a significant Municipal Monument Reserve.
Here we will find the Roman Catholic Church of St. James, which is valuable primarily because of its interior. There is a late Gothic altar of St. James from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča, which with its height of 18.6 m is the tallest of its kind in the world. On the market square we can also find the well-known cage of shame, the Renaissance town hall or the House of Thurzon. High above the city rises St. Mary’s Mountain, which is the largest pilgrimage site for Slovaks. In 1995, the late Pope John Paul II celebrated Holy Mass here.
